Hyperpigmentation – melasma
Hyperpigmentation is a common condition in which patches of skin grow darker in colour than normal surrounding skin. It may be caused by sun damage, inflammation, hormonal changes or skin injuries (including acne). It can be found anywhere on the body and can affect the skin colour of any race.
Super serum is perfect in treating hyperpigmentation – available at the MBNS online shop – click image to take you there!
Age spots (sometimes called liver spots) are a common form of hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage. Melasma is another form of hyperpigmentation. Pregnancy for example can trigger overproduction of melanin that causes the ‘mask of pregnancy’ on the face and darkened skin on the abdomen and other areas.
We here at MBNS and Qutis clinics tackle hyperpigmentation using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy and specific products from the iS Clinical line. IPL is considered a non-ablative resurfacing technique, which means that it targets the lower layers of skin (dermis) without affecting the top layers of skin (epidermis). The advantage of IPL therapy is its minimal downtime – a patient can often have the procedure done in their lunch break and return to work immediately afterwards.
The best products that go hand in hand with IPL photorejuvenation are Cleansing Complex (use AM and PM), Super Serum (AM) which diminishes the appearance of hyperpigmentation, hypertrophic scar tissue and even fine stretch marks . Active Serum is a stand alone product for night time and Eclipse SPF 50 which acts as moisturiser and sun block all in one to be used in the daytime.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment for the removal of sun damage and red veins.
Intense Pulsed Light treatment, also referred to as IPL, is a light treatment that targets red veins and sun damage to the skin. The process induces controlled wounds on the skin, by heating it up and so prompting it to heal itself by creating new cells and new collagen. This process reverses the effects of photoageing to a certain extent by removing wrinkles, sun spots, red veins and rosacea. The production of new collagen pushing to the surface of the skin also makes it look healthier and more youthful – we like to call it a photo facial.
We have been treating clients for many years here at MBNS and Qutis Clinics and over the years, we have seen many happy clients have dramatic changes to their skin resulting in a more positive outlook.
IPL Photorejuvenation removes sun damaged skin
There are a couple of contraindications to having IPL treatment. You cannot have an active suntan, have used sunbeds (you should never use sunbeds!) or fake tan like Fake Bake. These all change the pigment in the skin meaning that the whole area would heat up, not just the targeted area, and so you may experience a burn. It is best to wait until your tan has faded and make sure you use a good SPF 50 like iS Clinical’s Eclipse all year round.
Below is an article that was written by one such happy client for Essentials Magazine. She had some red (thread) veins that she wanted removed, and IPL Photorejuvenation was the perfect treatment for her.

We are often asked many questions in consultation here at MBNS Clinic in Thame regarding dermal fillers. Questions such as:
“I’m wary of fillers, but my face is looking gaunt now I am in my late thirties. What advice do you have for a first-timer?”
Judging by the number of ‘pillow faces’ in the press, you’d be forgiven for thinking dermal fillers never looked natural. But the experienced nurses of MBNS say it is a question of less is more. Our nurses are artistic and highly experienced and look at your face in an holistic way. They can work out exactly what is going to suit your face and the correct dermal fillers to use. It is nice to see a picture of the client from ten years ago, or taken in their early twenties. This allows the nurse to respect the natural contours of their face and work in a more bespoke way.
Whether they have had IPL or dermal fillers, or any other treatment we offer, every client who leaves MBNS is a walking advertisement for us
Our nurses ensure that every client has expectations that are managed realistically. Everyone who leaves MBNS is a walking advertisement for the clinic, that is why MBNS’ aim is to make their clients look their natural best whilst still looking like the same person, so the code by which to live by is definitely, LESS IS MORE.
Another area often discussed is IPL Photorejuvenation….
“I’ve heard mixed reports about IPL (Intense Pulsed Light Therapy) Is it a good treatment or not?”
IPL Photorejuvenation is a fantastic treatment for the removal of age spots (hyperpigmentation) and little veins around the nose with no downtime and effective results. It is also popular as a ‘next step photo-facial’ to improve skin tone, boost collagen and minimise pores. It really does keep the skin looking fresh and we hear is a favourite of the many of Hollywood’s actresses! MBNS has five experienced nurses who perform the treatment regularly and safely. In order to have safe, effective treatments, the skin must be free of any active tan, that includes fake tan or a dare I say, a sunbed tan! Usually several treatments are required, 4 to 6 weeks apart for great results.
If you would like to make a consultation with one of our specialist nurses about any of the treatments offered at MBNS, please call us on 01844 213007 or fill out the form HERE and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We look forward to helping you achieve your skin health goals gradually and naturally.

Do you suffer from uneven pigmentation on your skin? Do you have any brown (age) spots that are the result of sun damage? Would you prefer for your complexion to be more even?
Before and After 5 treatments with IPL and iS Clinical’s White Lightening
Well, here at MBNS in Thame, we have several products and treatments that can help with evening out skin tone and removing sun/age spots on the skin. We have a three pronged approach to this: IPL, White Lightening and SPF
1. INTENSE PULSED LIGHT (IPL) This treatment targets the pigmented areas with a light energy which initially darkens the area and after a few days, the brown spots slough off when washing. We also treat necks, décolletage and hands! You will probably need several treatments to get the best results, but IPL therapy also increases collagen production in the skin making it healthier and fuller, in short, it is a fantastic photo facial.
Available in a complex and a serum
2. Working hand in hand with IPL treatments for uneven pigmentation is a great product by the iS Clinical range called WHITE LIGHTENING™ which is a distinctive formula containing botanical ingredients such as mushroom extract that lightens skin and Norwegian sea kelp that gently exfoliates and prevents new pigment from forming. White Lightening is available in a complex and a serum. On consultation, your nurse will go through which would be the correct product for your skin.
iS Clinical’s SPF 50 – to be used ALL YEAR ROUND!
3. iS Clinical’s SPF Factor 50 is your protection against the sun, your moisturiser AND your prevention from these brown spots from returning. You should be using SPF daily, not just in the summer months!
So, what are the results from combining IPL and White Lightening?
Lighter, brighter skin
Reduction of hyperpigmented areas
Skin feels moisturised and softer
Reduction in fine lines and wrinkles
So if you would like to find out more about IPL Photorejuvenation and iS Clinical’s White Lightening, or any of the other services or treatments we offer at MBNS such as dermal fillers, botox or IPL permanent hair removal, kindly call us on 01844 213007 to book a consultation with one of our nurse specialists, or fill out the form HERE and we will get back to you swiftly.
