Treatment with JUVÉDERM® Dermal Filler
A synopsis from an article written by Allergan the makers of JUVÉDERM®:
A recent campaign developed by Allergan, the company who provide Botox® and dermal filler JUVÉDERM® has encouraged people to talk more positively about ageing.
The campaign, called #THISISME backed by leading aesthetic practitioners, was informed by extensive qualitative and quantitative research on 2,000 women from across the UK, which showed that women today feel much more positively about getting older than the anti-ageing category often suggests. However, they are still looking for effective beauty treatments that help them age the way they want and fear being judged by society as vain or superficial for wanting to look their best.
The campaign features six everyday women ranging in age from 35 to 69. The images will be in all forms of media, depict the women’s wrinkles and have not been air-brushed. This is to show other women that you don’t need photoshop to look great with facial fillers!
Simply put, women want to look their natural best and by means of showing their vibrant and audacious self regardless of their age! The bold campaign, #THISISME features women of all ages and backgrounds encouraging other women to continue to embrace the positives about getting older, but empowering them to make their own treatment choices and not be ashamed, so they can age as they want to.
MBNS and Qutis Clinics have treated many patients country wide with JUVÉDERM® and have facilitated them in looking their natural best.
Key findings from the research behind the campaign include:
1..Ageing well is more important than looking younger (only 20% of women say they want to look 5 years younger¹ but 41% say they want to look fresher and radiant)
2..Fillers, and those who have them, are stigmatised by society, leading to an inner conflict among those considering treatment (24% of women don’t have treatment until a year or more after it was considered)
3.. Women don’t talk about the treatment they’ve had, meaning other women considering treatment are denied the opportunity to discuss it with other women (even once treated, social stigma becomes the 3rd biggest concern about having fillers)
This campaign has also revealed that women are much more self-accepting and take a moderate view to beauty and improving their appearance rather than coveting the images we are used to seeing in magazines and adverts. Allergan also encourage all beauty brands to be more positive and empowering in the way they engage women on this topic.”

Our patients at MBNS and Qutis clinics visit us regularly as we provide a natural, fresher look for their skin. None more so than Geoff – who lost a lot of weight after spending months in hospital last year and was looking older than his years.
Juvederm Ultra was used to rejuvenate Geoff’s face
Geoff came to see one of our aesthetic nurse specialist, Stephanie Green, with a desire to look refreshed. He was well again, but his face did not reflect how he was really feeling inside. Geoff, on consultation with Stephanie decided to go ahead and have some dermal filler treatment, in this case, Juvederm Ultra was used. He didn’t want to look any younger but wanted to feel and look healthier.
As you can see from the photos below showing his before and after treatment, his face looks fuller and more healthy, and he now looks his natural best. His face now reflects his new healthy self.

A dermal filler called Juvederm Ultra was used
Post procedure, she wanted to tell everyone just how happy she is with the results.
Here is a short video from a patient of ours, who decided to have dermal filler treatment recently at MBNS Clinic in Thame, Oxfordshire.
Post procedure, she wanted to tell everyone just how happy she is with the results. Our nurse Marea used a dermal filler called Juvederm Ultra. It contains an anesthetic and so the procedure is comfortable and quick, and the results are so natural. There’s no magic in this video, no soft lighting, and no make up – just the facts!

Cosmetic Injections following PIP Breast Implant Scandal
Marea Brennan Thorns RN NIP MSc
This week we saw the long awaited response by the Department of Health to a review of the cosmetic market by the NHS medical director Prof Sir Bruce Keogh.
Sir Bruce Keogh was asked to review the standards and training within the surgical and non-surgical cosmetic sector following the PIP breast implant scandal. PIP was a French company who were found to be using inferior products in its breast implants. Many women were affected and thousands had to have their breast implants removed and replaced.
Sir Bruce Keogh made a number of recommendations affecting breast implants, plastic surgery and other medical devices and injectables such as dermal fillers and wrinkle treatments.
MBNS was hopeful like many other professional clinics in the industry that the Government would insist on higher standards for everybody, providing dermal fillers and Botox injections. However this does not seem to have been made clear in the latest report.
The original paper with its recommendations was published by Sir Bruce Keogh several months ago and we have been waiting for the government Department of Health to review these recommendations and to support or enhance them, or even to disagree with them.
Department of Health Response to Sir Bruce Keogh’s Report regarding cosmetic injections
So, after several delays the government has finally responded this week. We would like to give you a simple summary of what has been said and perhaps more importantly summarise how MBNS is responding and what steps we already have in place to meet the key recommendations in the report, published in April 2013.
1. The government has not insisted upon a national register for all clinics providing wrinkle treatments and dermal fillers. We believe this is unfortunate and MBNS feels that customers would feel safer with a national body to approve registration of clinics providing wrinkle treatments and dermal fillers.
2. Botulinum Toxin (Botox) is already classified as a prescription only medicine (POM). This gives patients an added level of security and safety when they meet with a nurse prescriber or Doctor face-to-face for a consultation and prescription before any Botox injection can take place. We were hoping that dermal fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm would be treated in exactly the same way by law. MBNS clinic ALREADY treat dermal fillers as prescription only, but this is not enforced by law and this is not the case everywhere.
3. We were hoping that the government would insist that only doctors and nurses are suitably qualified to perform Botox and dermal filler injections. At MBNS this is already the case. However, this is not the law and there are many unregulated, non-healthcare professionals in the UK who are injecting Botox and dermal fillers. We believe this is not a safe position for patients and that the government should insist on better control and training in this area.
4. Health Education England (HEE) are working with the Royal College of Surgeons and other medical professionals and stakeholders to conduct a review of the training and skills needed. We hope this leads to clearer guidelines both on the training of medical professionals within the cosmetic industry and to greater clarity around who is responsible for supervising clinics and practices providing cosmetic injections such as Botox and dermal fillers. We believe that customers expect the government to insist on a national standard for training and that this will bring greater safety for patients.
5. It seems that there may now be a national register of all breast implants. Breast implants are classified as medical devices. We hoped and expected that dermal fillers would be treated in a very similar way but this seems to not be the case.
Overall many in the industry are disappointed with the lack of clarity and standards which being proposed by the government in the area of surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments. This view is supported by many including the president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), Mr Rajiv Grover who said in response to the recent report;
“Frankly, we are no less than appalled at the lack of action taken – this review, not the first one conducted into the sector, represents yet another thoroughly wasted opportunity to ensure patient safety. With all the evidence provided by the clinical community, choosing not to reclassify fillers as medicines with immediate effect or setting up any kind of compulsory register beggars belief. Legislators have clearly been paying only lip service to the sector’s dire warnings that dermal fillers are a crisis waiting to happen. Most shockingly of all, the fact that there is no requirement for the actual surgeon involved to provide consent for the procedure makes a mockery of the entire process. It’s business as usual in the Wild West and the message from the Government is clear: roll up and feel free to have a stab.”
So in light of all this, what steps does MBNS take to ensure the highest standards of patient safety and quality of treatment for our customers?
Highest Quality Products
We only use the highest standard of Botox and dermal fillers. Allergan, one of our main suppliers, who manufacture Botox and other dermal fillers meet the high standards in the industry, all Allergan fillers (including the JUVÉDERM® range, as well as the SURGIDERM® range) meet the following standards of approval:
MDD 93/42/EEC: Medical Device Directive & latest amendment 2007/47/EC
FDA 21 CFR Part 820: Quality System Regulation
ISO 13485:2003: Quality managements systems – requirements for regulatory purposes
Compliance of Materials to EP/USP monographs
ISO 10993-1: 2009 – Biological evaluation of MDs – for implant devices intended for long term contact duration in tissue/bone”
ICH Guidance for Stability and Validation of Analytical Methods
ISO 17665-1: 2006, EN 556-1: 2001 & ISO 11737-1: 2006 – for the sterilization of MDs
ISO 14644 : Manufacturing and Filling in Class ISO 6 (under Class 5 laminar flow), Sterilization in Class ISO 6 and Packaging in Class ISO 7
Qualified Medical Practitioners
At MBNS all our cosmetic injections are performed by qualified, registered and trained nurses. All our nurses are registered by and are accountable to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Most of our nurses also have an advanced practitioner qualification and are also qualified to PRESCRIBE as well as inject Botox and dermal fillers. This is known as the nurse Independent prescriber (NIP) qualification.
Specialist Training and Supervision
All non-surgical procedures are performed under the responsibility of the clinical professional who has gained the accredited qualification to prescribe administer and supervise aesthetic procedures. At MBNS Clinic this professional is Marea Brennan Thorns MSc RN NIP. She is an advanced nurse practitioner in aesthetic medicine (Rotherham School of Nursing 1976, Oxford Brookes University, 2006, 2010).
Laser and IPL treatments are carried out by accredited laser therapists under the supervision of Marea Brennan Thorns MSc RN NIP and Stephanie Green RN, who both have BTec qualifications in Laser Applications to the Skin (Loughborough College 2001).
MBNS Nurses Provide Input
The government’s mandate for Health Education England (HEE) includes the development of appropriate accredited qualifications for providers of non-surgical interventions and it should determine accreditation requirements of the various professional groups. The work already carried out by the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses in 2013 in their published and peer reviewed competency document is being utilised by the HEE. The HEE qualification recommendations should be completed by April 2014. Nurses from Qutis & MBNS Clinics have worked on this document (BACN Competency Framework Document 2013).

Victoria Beckham has IPL laser hair removal.
Photo: Daily Mail Online
It has been reported in the Daily Mail online today that Victoria Beckham no longer shaves her legs and now has laser hair removal! Advised by her friend Eva Longoria, Mrs B now has smooth legs and wastes no more of her valuable time on daily shaving!
Well, we could have told her that years ago! At MBNS Clinic in Thame, we have been treating clients for removal of unwanted hair for over 17 years now and the results are permanent and freeing!
Clients require several treatments (spaced 12 weeks apart on the body, or 6 weeks apart on the face, as that is the length of a complete hair cycle). Once the hair has diminished, you are left with smooth, hassle free legs plus time to get on with other things such as launching your designer clothing label or running four miles a day, such as Victoria!
It is also great to see how clients help us do our job by referring our clinic to their friends, much as Eva advised Victoria about going to have IPL laser hair removal. The best advertisement for us at MBNS is happy clients sharing their experiences with friends, resulting in them having a little ‘thank you” from us in the form of a £50 voucher to put towards their next treatment (after their friend has had their first treatment).
If you would like to find out more regarding IPL Permanent Hair Removal or any of the other treatments such as dermal fillers or maybe wrinkle reduction offered at MBNS Clinic in Thame by our specialist nurses, why not call us now on 01844 213007 or fill out the form HERE and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

We are often asked many questions in consultation here at MBNS Clinic in Thame regarding dermal fillers. Questions such as:
“I’m wary of fillers, but my face is looking gaunt now I am in my late thirties. What advice do you have for a first-timer?”
Judging by the number of ‘pillow faces’ in the press, you’d be forgiven for thinking dermal fillers never looked natural. But the experienced nurses of MBNS say it is a question of less is more. Our nurses are artistic and highly experienced and look at your face in an holistic way. They can work out exactly what is going to suit your face and the correct dermal fillers to use. It is nice to see a picture of the client from ten years ago, or taken in their early twenties. This allows the nurse to respect the natural contours of their face and work in a more bespoke way.
Whether they have had IPL or dermal fillers, or any other treatment we offer, every client who leaves MBNS is a walking advertisement for us
Our nurses ensure that every client has expectations that are managed realistically. Everyone who leaves MBNS is a walking advertisement for the clinic, that is why MBNS’ aim is to make their clients look their natural best whilst still looking like the same person, so the code by which to live by is definitely, LESS IS MORE.
Another area often discussed is IPL Photorejuvenation….
“I’ve heard mixed reports about IPL (Intense Pulsed Light Therapy) Is it a good treatment or not?”
IPL Photorejuvenation is a fantastic treatment for the removal of age spots (hyperpigmentation) and little veins around the nose with no downtime and effective results. It is also popular as a ‘next step photo-facial’ to improve skin tone, boost collagen and minimise pores. It really does keep the skin looking fresh and we hear is a favourite of the many of Hollywood’s actresses! MBNS has five experienced nurses who perform the treatment regularly and safely. In order to have safe, effective treatments, the skin must be free of any active tan, that includes fake tan or a dare I say, a sunbed tan! Usually several treatments are required, 4 to 6 weeks apart for great results.
If you would like to make a consultation with one of our specialist nurses about any of the treatments offered at MBNS, please call us on 01844 213007 or fill out the form HERE and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We look forward to helping you achieve your skin health goals gradually and naturally.

We here at MBNS Clinic in Thame have been helping our clients achieve their skin health goals for over 17 years and during the many consultations that have taken place before treatment, two of the same questions come up time after time to our team of nurse prescribers and specialist nurses. The top two are always about Botox and Lip Fillers.
Q. I would like to have a Botox treatment, how long does it last and how often can I be treated?
Here at MBNS we like to give what we call a “European look” with our wrinkle relaxing treatment. To us, that means that although the areas have been treated with the medicine, you will not be left with a frozen look or ‘deer stuck in headlights’ look as is seen many times over in the USA. A ‘full’ Botox treatment (that is three areas treated: the crows feet, between the eyes and the forehead) will last 12 weeks or longer, and your nurse will advise you of the date when you may safely have another treatment.
For safety sake, and because Botox is a prescribed medicine (POM), you cannot be treated any sooner than 12 weeks apart. You should be fully aware also that this and any injectable treatments should be performed only by a medical professional, and in MBNS’s case, an Aesthetic Nurse Specialist, of which we have five in our busy Thame Clinic.
Q. I want fuller lips, but I don’t want to end up with a trout pout!
We err on the side of caution here at MBNS Clinic. Our patients who want to have a lip enhancement are advised to have a lip hydrator such as Juvederm Volbella. This fantastic treatment adds minimal volume to lips that have lost collagen due to ageing, so the shape of the lips is not changed, they just look softer and more youthful. Gone are the days of the “trout pout” of yesteryear. Again, this treatment is performed by one of our team of highly experienced Specialist Nurses.
This month of February, MBNS has a special offer on Juvederm Volbella. Call us on 01844 213007 to find out more and book your consultation. If you would prefer to send us an email, you can do so HERE and we will get back to as soon as we can.
We look forward to helping you look your natural best and achieve your skin health goals at MBNS.

A story was reported in the Daily Mail this week about a young woman, Anna Taylor, who had used a sunbed every day for three years and as a result, developed a cancerous tumour which after being removed, has left her scarred for life. To read the full article, click HERE.
From the Daily Mail online
Although Anna had discontinued using sunbeds for over ten years, the damage had already been done, and at 33 she had to have an operation to remove the basal cell carcinoma in her cheek.
NEVER USE A SUNBED!
We here at MBNS Clinic in Thame are experts in keeping your skin healthy and safe from the damaging rays of the sun and UVA and UVB light that sunbeds produce. Much has been written about the affect of sunbed UV light on the skin and there are more than 200,000 cases of this type of cancer a year in the UK.
We advocate use of a good SPF factor 50 along with iS Clinical’s antioxidant serums such as Pro Heal and Super Serum to protect and feed the skin. We advise that you NEVER use a sunbed and when in the real sunshine, always use a good SPF a hat and sunglasses. If you do want a tanned look, then use a fake tan product such as the FAKE BAKE range, you can get the healthy glow….safely!
Recently, the NHS has brought out a very striking poster showing exactly what damage a sunbed can do to the skin…see below – it is shocking!
If you would like to arrange a consultation with one of our nurse specialists regarding the health of your skin, why not ring us on 01844 213007 or fill out the form HERE and we will get back to you quickly.
MBNS Clinic in Thame offers many treatments for healthy skin such as wrinkle relaxants, dermal fillers, IPL Photorejuvenation (which helps to remove sun damaged skin!) and IPL Permanent hair reduction to name a few. Our aim is to help you keep your skin healthy and look your natural best.
