This particular treatment needs to be undertaken when the patient has no active suntan – or accidental sun exposure… This is because the intense pulsed energy light is attracted to pigment and it sees the dark hairs it needs to remove BUT if there is a suntan, it will see that change in the skin pigment also. This means that not be able to distinguish between the areas of pigment resulting in the area becoming too hot and therefore you could experience a burn.
Here are the guidelines for pre and post IPL Hair Removal treatment:
Do I need to shave beforehand?
For the initial patch test, you will not need to prepare the area as this will be done by our practitioner. However, it is advisable that you ‘close shave’ the area before treatment to avoid shaving rash and discomfort, it is best that patients come shaved to their subsequent hair removal appointments.
Fake tans and gentle daily tanning creams should also not be applied for 2 weeks prior to treatment.
Aerobic exercise should be avoided for 24 hours.
Quick lukewarm showers are recommended. Please avoid hot baths for 24 hours.
Following treatment, If your skin becomes broken or a blister appears, it is important to notify the clinic and your nurse will advise you accordingly.
If further treatment is required, a commitment to avoid direct sunlight is necessary. As mentioned previously, if you have sun exposure and do not tell us about it, certain complications may occur following Laser/IPL treatment, such as pigmentation and burning.
iS Clinical SHEALD® healing balm will be applied by your nurse immediately after treatment. This will take the heat out of your skin. If your skin continues to feel prickly or hot we recommend that you purchase some SHEALD for home use. You may also wish to apply cold packs, aloe vera or iS Clinical Hydra Cool Serum.
Sun exposure, Including fake tanning lotions and spray tans are to be avoided for at least 3 weeks before treatment and then for the following 3 weeks. We strongly advise patients to protect their skin with one of our pharmaceutical grade moisturising SPFs, such as iS Clinical SPF 50 or SPF 30, which should be applied daily. Further UV protection can be gained by combining iS Clinical Super Serum Advance + with your iS Clinical SPF.
After your treatment, makeup may be applied as long as your skin is not broken.
For IPL and Laser Hair Removal patients, avoid removing any hair follicles by the root (plucking, waxing or hair removal creams), only trimming is recommended between treatments.
