A visit to FACE in London last weekend with Adrian Baker

June 27th, 2014

FACE-2014-Logo

I was really excited to attend this year’s FACE  as it is great to be among your peers and others who are experts in our aesthetic field.

One of the  highlights for me was a VIP invitation from manufacturers MERZ, who make our wrinkle relaxing toxin Xeomin,  along with dermal fillers Boletero and Radiesse, to attend a private interactive session with world class aesthetic practitioners, including Dr Timothy Flynn and Dr Michael Kane, on new techniques for HA (Hyaluronic) fillers for contouring the ageing face.

FACE 2014 is the UK’s largest annual conference with guest practitioners from around the globe.

Charleen de Haven and Adrian

Also, I was lucky enough to have a private meeting with Dr Charlene Dehaven, Medical Director of iS Clinical, in the USA, the skincare line we advocate here at MBNS and Qutis Clinics.  I discussed her research into Extreme Protect SPF 30 and how its protection has shown to be more protective from the damaging effects of sunlight, than standing in a dark room!!

Aqualyx – Fat dissolving injections available at MBNS and Qutis Clinics

Finally after a very busy weekend at FACE,  I attended the Press conference for a few insights into “the next big thing” in medical aesthetics.  Low and behold, Dr Timothy Flynn from the USA, discussed how injectable fat dissolving and contouring was being predicted as something new to hit the USA soon. At MBNS and Qutis we foresaw this early and are already providing Aqualyx fat dissolving treatments, much to the delight of our patients.

Skin Cancer – the facts and prevention

June 24th, 2014

Increase the appearance of wrinkles and the visible signs of ageing? Use a sunbed

Increase the appearance of wrinkles and the visible signs of ageing? Use a sunbed

I know this is a subject that many people don’t like to discuss, well nobody likes to talk about the “C” word do they?  However, we at MBNS and Qutis clinics feel we are duty bound to inform about the risks of developing skin cancer as we are a skin clinic and our aim is to keep your skin healthy!

So here are the hard facts! (source cruk.org)

1.  There have been around 12,800 cases of malignant melanoma diagnosed in 2010 in the UK – that’s about 35 people a day.

2.  Using a sunbed before the ago of 35 increases your risk of developing skin cancer by up to 75%.

3.  Getting a painful sunburn just once every two years can triple the risk of the most serious type of skin cancer.

4.  People with light eyes or hair, who sunburn easily or do not tan have an increased risk of skin cancer,

5.  People with a lot of moles, unusually shaped or large moles, or a lot of freckles have a higher risk of melanoma.

6.  A history of sunburn doubles the risk of melanoma and also increases the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer.

7.  People with a previous non-melanoma skin cancer have a much higher risk of developing a second one.

8.  People with a close relative diagnosed with skin cancer have a higher risk of developing it themselves.

You can prevent skin cancer by adhering to the following:

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-photos-sun-hat-beach-pink-sand-image32560273

Seek the shade and wear a wide brimmed hat to prevent skin cancer

Wearing a suitable sunscreen of at least Factor 50 EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR – not just when the sun is out!  We love iS Clinical’s Eclipse Factor 50 which protects against both the UVA and UVB rays and is paraben free.  This will prevent sunburn which as already mentioned can enable skin cancer to develop on the skin.

Try to keep out of the direct sunshine, especially during the hours between 10am and 2pm when the rays are at their strongest.

Wear protective clothing such as a long sleeved top, trousers and wear a wide brimmed hat.

If you are concerned about skin cancer in any shape or form, we advise you to visit your GP. Once the areas of concern have been checked, all  our nurses remove benign moles, skin tags, cherry angiomas and seborrhoeic keratoses.  We also can remove sun damaged skin with IPL Photorejuvenation.

To make an appointment for a consultation with one of our nurse specialists, please do ring 01844 213007 for MBNS or 01993 704050 for Qutis and we will get back to you swiftly.  Alternatively, if you would prefer to contact us by email CLICK HERE for MBNS and CLICK HERE for Qutis.

IPL for thread veins and sun damaged skin

June 20th, 2014

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment for the removal of sun damage and red veins. Also used for Permanent Hair Removal

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment for the removal of sun damage and red veins.

Intense Pulsed Light treatment, also referred to as IPL,  is a light treatment that targets red veins and sun damage to the skin.   The process induces controlled wounds on the skin, by heating it up and so prompting it to heal itself by creating new cells and new collagen.  This process reverses the effects of photoageing to a certain extent by removing wrinkles, sun spots, red veins and rosacea.  The production of new collagen pushing to the surface of the skin also makes it look healthier and more youthful – we like to call it a photo facial.

We have been treating clients for many years here at MBNS and Qutis Clinics and over the years, we have seen many happy clients have dramatic changes to their skin resulting in a more positive outlook.

IPL Photorejuvenation removes sun damaged skin

There are a couple of contraindications to having IPL treatment.  You cannot have an active suntan, have used sunbeds (you should never use sunbeds!)  or fake tan like Fake Bake.  These all change the pigment in the skin meaning that the whole area would heat up, not just the targeted area, and so you may experience a burn. It is best to wait until your tan has faded and make sure you use a good SPF 50 like iS Clinical’s Eclipse all year round.

Below is an article that was written by one such happy client for Essentials Magazine.  She had some red (thread) veins  that she wanted removed, and IPL Photorejuvenation was the perfect treatment for her.

Herbal supplements – what you need to know before treatment.

June 17th, 2014

Some Vitamins and Supplements can be a contraindication to treatment

Some vitamins and herbal supplements can be a contraindication to treatment

This day and age, the focus is on health and what we put into our bodies to keep it healthy. Today’s diet is often filled with convenient but  less than nutritious choices, and so the need to supplement with vitamins is ever on the increase.

Along with the good benefits of taking supplements comes a cautionary warning for those of our patients considering treatments such as dermal fillers like Juvederm, or treatment for lines and wrinkles.  Also, some herbal preparations may be contraindicated if you are considering Laser/IPL treatment for permanent hair removal or for the removal of pigmentation and red veins.

Herbal supplement – St John’s Wort

We here at MBNS and Qutis Clinics ask that if you do take St John’s Wart or any supplements that thin the blood such as Vitamin E, Gingko Biloba, Feverfew, Ginseng, Red Clover, Fish oil, and garlic supplements, you should tell your nurse.  If you don’t want to take any chances, stop taking your multi-vitamin also if it contains more than 40 IU (units) of vitamin E.

For Father’s Day – The ever increasing male aesthetic market

June 13th, 2014

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-image-man-having-botox-treatment-beauty-clinic-close-up-image40125821

Here come the boys – our male aesthetic market is increasing weekly!

As Father’s Day is almost upon us this weekend, we thought we would share some insider information into the ever growing male aesthetic market, which according to the BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons),  has seen a dramatic rise in males having cosmetic procedures.

This is largely due to an influx of male targeted advertising and male centred media attention.  An increase of 17% to 3,600 men were treated over previous year, (3,004) has been reported.

Men are going for smaller procedures more frequently and previously female focussed clinics  now open their arms to this growing market  and make them feel more welcome!

As more males come to our clinics for treatment, we at MBNS and Qutis Clinics are ever more  focussed on catering to this ever increasing share of the market.

Since the early 90’s when the Aesthetic industry took off, clients being treated were on the whole, female.  They walked into a soothing female focused environment where they could be among kindred spirits:  united and safe within the walls of a discreet, confidential and caring clinic.

Clinics need of course to be warm and welcoming to all, with the invitation to enjoy a frothy latte or cup of tea whilst waiting for your Nurse Practitioner.  The décor should be neutral and fresh with literature in the waiting catering to this growing market.

Some likened it to  walking into a mother’s meeting, and felt that they ought to retreat!

When we surveyed our male clients at our MBNS clinic in Thame, and Qutis Clinic in Witney, Oxfordshire, the majority said that at first impression, they felt a little embarrassed when they walked through our door.  Some likened it to  walking into a mother’s meeting, and felt that they ought to retreat. They did however stand their ground!   They had made the giant leap to decide to come and have treatment in the first place and they’d even started using good skin care products and an SPF to boot, but on arrival, they  still felt  like the new kid on the block!

Our clinics meet the demands of both our female and male clients.  We are sensitive to  the outward appearance and indeed want to make that ultimate first impression be a positive one to ALL we treat.

This is what we have in place at MBNS and Qutis to cater for our male clients:

1   Neutral Colours on the wall and furnishings

2.  A great choice of beverages made from a good barista coffee maker!

3.  A variety of good male magazines of the GQ variety along with a possibly Psychology Today and Vogue or Marie Claire – never any weekly glossies!

4.  Retail products focussing on male treatments.

MBNS and Qutis Clinics provide many skin treatments including:  wrinkle softening, dermal fillers, permanent hair removal, mole removal and skin tightening to name a few.

If you would like to book in for a consultation with one of our specialist nurses, please call MBNS on 01844 213007 or Qutis Witney on 01993 704050 and we will get back to you swiftly.

If you would prefer to contact us by email click HERE for MBNS and HERE for Qutis. So why not invite your husbands, fathers and sons down to see us!  We look forward to seeing you welcoming you all!

Skin resurfacing – great results with eMatrix

June 4th, 2014

http://mbnsclinic.co.uk/treatments/ematrix/Since we at MBNS and Qutis Clinics started providing skin resurfacing treatments with eMatrix, (also called sublative rejuvenation) we have had some amazing results.  The treatment is fantastic if you have any of the following:  acne scarring, acneic skin, lines and wrinkles, skin irregularities, bags under the eyes, and stretchmarks.

‘The healing begins when the collagen starts to rebuild itself and pushes newly produced collagen to the surface”.

Skin resurfacing with ematrix works this way:  heat emitting radio waves are placed on to the surface of the skin, heating it up and blasting deep into the dermis.  This in turn causes the collagen underneath the skin to be pushed apart.  The healing begins when the collagen starts to rebuild itself and pushes newly produced collagen to the surface. This then improves the surface of the skin so acne scarring and lines and wrinkles to name two are greatly reduced.

Downtime for this treatment is a few days, but we provide excellent camouflage make up called Lycogel, that contains an anti inflammatory which really encourages the skin to heal quickly.

Below is a patient of ours who had suffered with acne throughout her life and was left with scarring and extremely sore skin.

After having had microneedle therapy and C02 laser resurfacing, she still did not see any improvement, so she came in for a consultation with our specialist nurses and was treated twice with eMatrix, six weeks apart.

She is absolutely floored at the vast and speedy improvement of tone and texture to her skin.  Here are her before and after photos taken 12 weeks apart after 2 treatments:
