MBNS agree: ‘Ban non-medics from giving Botox’

February 22nd, 2013

The Royal College of Surgeons have released a statement regarding the above and although not a regulatory body as they readily admit but the DOH will be taking this announcement seriously with their current cosmetic surgery review, which includes cosmetic injections.  It is great that nurses are very definitely identified along with our doctor colleagues so long as they are properly trained & have the appropriate skills.

img-contactThe BBC News recently highlighted a subject very close to our hearts.  We have four nurse specialists:  Marea Brennan Thorns, Stephanie Green, Paula Shurrock and Adrian Baker who have been safely injecting patients with Botox and dermal fillers for over 15 years in the Oxfordshire area.  Our reputation and experience goes beofre us, but it is imperative  to highlight that:  Non medically trained therapists are very definitely identified as NOT having the correct skills or qualification to prescribe and or ‘administer appearance altering’ injections into the dermis. And beauty salons have been named as not being a fit for purpose venue for cosmetic injections such as Botox.

Here at MBNS and our sister clinics Qutis,   our three colleagues Ruth (also an RN), Gayle & Cheryl are indeed Advanced Beauty Therapists and are certificated to carry out Laser Therapies under our guidance and their competence in these specialist areas is safe, competent and plays a vital part within our clinic model. What’s more, we are all a united team of experts and followers with an internal system of continued learning and standards. Laser therapies and LHE (Light and Heat Energy)  were not specifically mentioned in this statement.

And I conclude, we are a clinic group with excellent standards who have led and will continue to lead the way in giving excellent patient care within medical aesthetics.

Art Exhibition at our Witney Botox Clinic – sister clinic of MBNS

February 22nd, 2013

There is more to botox and dermal fillers than just injecting. Is there a connection between art and facial aesthetics? We believe we can learn a little more about facial beauty from a professional artist. London Painter, Angelique Hartigan, shares artist tips with our Aesthetic Nurses and displays a selection of her art for sale at Qutis Witney.

Pop Up Art Exhibition and Open Weekend at Facial Aesthetic Clinic, QUTIS CLINIC, 27 Corn Street, Witney. 16,17,18th March 2013.

“Beauty is whatever gives joy” Edna St Vincent Millais

Where Art Meets Aesthetic Nursing

Wellbeing and aesthetics go hand in hand. Being surrounded by beautiful objects and knowing you look good contributes to happiness. With this in mind longtime clinic owners and skilled aesthetic nurses at Qutis Clinic Witney are hosting an exhibition of work by contemporary artist and Qutis client, Angelique Hartigan. “We provide a relaxing and inspiring space at our nurse-led clinic which is ideal to exhibit Angelique’s uplifting and vibrant paintings. Qutis will be open on the 16th, 17th and 18th of March until 4pm to anyone curious about art and beauty. Join us to find out more about our work over some refreshments”, says Marea Brennan Thorns one of the founder nurse specialists. Angelique and the nursing team will be on hand to meet with the guests to answer any questions about the artwork and aesthetic procedures available.Artist trains botox nurses

Contemporary artist Angelique Hartigan is teaming up with Aesthetic Nurse Specialists Marea Brennan Thorns, Stephanie Green Sheila Maloney and Adrian Baker at Qutis Advanced Skin Clinics in Witney. They are combining an exclusive Pop Up Art Exhibition of new paintings depicting the City of Oxford with a Qutis Clinic Open Weekend. By combining a temporary exhibition whilst demonstrating treatments available we hope to engage with a new audience who appreciate the joy of beauty. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artist and the aesthetic nurses, book procedures and buy art.

Artist Angelique has also had the MBNS Skin Rejuvenation Face Lift

“I spend much of my time outside for work at art fairs and markets, sometimes in all weathers, which can be damaging to my skin. A friend recommended the non-invasive treatments at MBNS Advanced Skin Clinic in Thame.   She looked great without even having a Botox treatment, so I was intrigued and made an appointment.

After a very warm welcome I was then met by my advanced nurse specialist Marea Brennan Thorns who took a full medical history in a private room, explained the procedure and we talked about what I would like to achieve. We also discussed my lifestyle and how I felt about my skin, how an improvement might make me feel and of course it was during this time that I mentioned my work as an artist and experience running pop-ups. During my Intense Pulsed Light treatment we talked about aesthetics and hatched a plan to hold an exhibition.

I’ve also been using the iS Clinical range of skincare since November 2012 and have noticed a dramatic improvement in the clarity and tone of my skin even ahead of other treatments. The treatments have certainly given my confidence a boost to the point where I am again happy to wear no make-up more often. Quite simply. I feel great!

“Pop-ups have been around for years but they are only really starting to take off because people are beginning to see that they can work.” says Angelique, she goes on to add:

“I know that the Arts Council for Health & Wellbeing state that: experiencing the arts and culture can create a sense of wellbeing and transform the quality of life for individuals and communities. What is less well known is that every day the arts are having a significant impact on people’s health in hospitals, health centres, GP practices and other healthcare settings within and throughout our communities.”

“Oxfordshire is a beautiful county and I wanted to celebrate this through a series of new works centred on the City of Oxford and it’s historic buildings. I hope that our pop-up will bring together people who understand the power of art to create a sense of well-being as well as the inner confidence that can be achieved by looking good… I’m looking forward to bringing my work to a new audience and introducing some of my clients to Witney.” Angelique Hartigan

Pop Up Art in Corn Street

Pop up galleries and shops have grown over the last few years as a result of the economic downturn. In response to the growing number of empty comercial spaces, artists have been able to take advantage of this situation and provide a focus for creative people and start-up companies to test the market. It is also a great way to help regenerate and maintain the area – in particular Witney’s Corn Street; benefitting the wider community whilst the business owner is able to showcase their commercial space or business.  It’s a great way to generate interest, income and community without significant capital outlay. In London, Pop-ups have substituted the notion of shabby and makeshift with creativity and an element of chic. By holding Pop-ups in existing business spaces, artists are able to engage with a new audience, and in our case this weekend, aesthetic nurses can team up and show their appeal and passion for their work to a diverse bunch of people.

Do the over 60’s use Botox or other anti-ageing treatments?

February 12th, 2013

HM

Helen Mirren, one of the more mature woman giving the young ones a run for their money!

How do Stars of the “Silver” Screen look great in their 60’s? What, if any, are their anti-ageing secrets?

In light of the BAFTA’s on Sunday night, and watching  the array of Hollywood ‘s most beautiful walking down the red carpet on an horrendous February night in London,  I thought I would let you into a little observation.  Among the glitz and glamour oozing from the young starlets were many more, shall we say, mature stars giving these whipper snappers a run for their money! You might assume a few of these have Botox or other anti-ageing treatments, who knows or cares?

In the words of Mae West “You are never too old to become younger!”

The well known saying “stars of the silver screen” is taking on a whole new meaning these days with the emphasis on the word ‘silver’ as the baby boomers mature but still hold their place highly in the stakes of admired and much sort after actors.  The days when an actress couldn’t get a job when she hit 40 seems to be on the wane  and this well respected and experienced age group of  stars want us to know ‘they’ve still got it’ and they compete in their own confident way with the 20 something ‘up and comings’.

Sixty, it seems, is now definitely the new 40!

Actors such as Dame Helen Mirren, 67, (pictured) Susan Sarandon 66, and Sigourney Weaver, 63 are fantastic examples of gorgoeus sixty somethings who take care of themselves and who grace the big screens regularly.  And it is not only the women!  Richard Gere, 63, Liam Neeson, 60, and even Harrison Ford,  61, to name a few, have a glamour all their own that transcends age.

And we here in our industry and more specifically at our clinic, note a massive rise in men and women seeking cosmetic beauty treatments and  buying anti ageing products well into their 60’s and 70’s.

Our emphasis is on making you look well rested so that if you have  a special landmark birthday coming up, you can approach it with arms open,  as you are mature enough to know that you are not  twenty again, nor do you want to be (!) , but embrace the age you are and to  look your natural best.

Botox for Hayfever?

February 1st, 2013

http://www.dreamstime.com/-image24835625I have  read about the preliminary Melbourne trial which suggested Botox for hayfever works. I only wish I could be recruited into the 70 strong study, as I have allergic rhinitis. Apparently a Botox gel  has been developed and  is applied to the nose to hopefully give hayfever sufferers relief from symptoms for up to three months!   I am going to ask our Allergan rep who looks after us here at MBNS  about it. I f I found out more,  I will post another blog, so watch this space!

Botox  – many more uses than just for wrinkles!

We, the nurses at MBNS have been treating patients with Botulinum Toxin A (commonly referrred to as  Botox)  for over fifteen years both cosmetically and medically  for the relief of various conditions such as Bruxism  (persistent jaw clenching) and Hyperhidrosis (the treatment for excessive sweating).   The relief gained from the treatment of these conditions have   changed many of our paatient’s lives for the better, where they had thought that no treatment was available.

Bruxism  (grinding teeth while asleep) is a condition that affects many people, and the persistent grinding of teeth can result in terrible stress headaches and teeth problems.  A few simple injections into the jaw brings relief between 2 to fourteen days.   Excessive sweating also  has been relieved by simple injections that works for six months.

Botox really does have a multitiude of uses more than just for the relaxing  of lines and wrinkles, and so the advancement into relief of hayfever is just another step in proving what an important place Botox has in the health industry.

if you would like to find out more about any of the treatments we offer at MBNS, feel free to call to speak to one of our team live on 01844 213007.
